The Greek Community at Chico State has made tremendous progress in the past five years, and much of that growth and development has been due to the constant hard work of Greek Life Advisor Larry Bassow.
As an alumni of a Greek chapter at Chico, Larry has devoted his time and energy into truly helping students learn and take advantage of all that Greek Life has to offer them. That is why when Larry was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer this year, the entire Greek Community rallied to help him in any way they could.
Sigma Pi organized a Woodstock’s Fundraiser for Larry, where a percentage of all purchases made between 12 pm and 9 pm went to help cover medical expenses for Larry. A secret event, members of Interfraternity Council surprised Larry by bringing him to the fundraiser, an event he had no idea was occurring.
When Larry walked through the front door, the room burst into applause and members of various chapters were present. A short speech was given about his contributions to the community, and then Larry was given a chance to speak. Tears welled up in his eyes as he expressed his gratitude for everyone’s contributions. Larry was presented with one of the all-Greek shirts designed by 4 Greeks and Common Culture.
Larry walked to all the tables and thanked everyone in attendance, it was truly an inspiring event and a great display of how the Greek Community can come together to help out a friend in need. Larry is now in recovery and we look forward to his return to campus and the Greek Life office!
