4-Greeks had the privilege of interviewing Phil Chu, the Public Relations chair and new Brother of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.  Phil Chu decided to go Greek as a transfer because he saw the benefits of having a large pool of friends to collaborate with and to expand his social and professional network. When asked “Why Phi Delta Theta?” Phil responded by explaining “I chose Phi Delta Theta for two reasons. First, because my brothers are all great people–unique individuals who are not only leaders but who are genuinely kind and hardworking and represent a diverse range of backgrounds. Second, because being a founding father gave me the opportunity to start something new and to form the foundations of an organization that I could one day look back on with pride.”.

Up 'Til Dawn - Game On!

The theme was “Game On!” so students showed up not only in letters and Chico State attire, but football jerseys too. Frisbees, pizza, drinks, cinnamon bread, shirts, and so much more were given out to students who participated. The shirts were inspirational and made it clear what we were all there for– “Chico State vs. Childhood Cancer: Game On!“

Hundreds of students were addressing envelopes and filing out donation letters at tables with classmates, friends, Brothers, and Sisters. In between licking envelopes shut, getting hand cramps from writing addresses, and getting to know our fellow Chico State students and greeks, raffles were held and generous prizes were given away. Prizes included: an Arron Rodgers autographed jersey, an iPad, and a semester’s tuition!

Balloons had greek letters on them, distinguishing chapters from one another, and making the greek system’s presence at the event impossible to ignore. I overheard one male student even say, “Wow, they’re everywhere!” referring to all of the surrounding students in letters. 

Greek Support

The greek community is extremely involved in Up ‘Til Dawn and are driven by their passion for helping out and giving back to the community. The group who had the most addressed letters last year was a sorority on campus, Alpha Delta Pi, and was especially recognized on Monday night for it.

The greeks’ participation and enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed, and everyone sporting their new shirts the following day made it clear that if you didn’t go to Up ‘Til Dawn, you definitely missed out.

Greek Week has finally come to an end.

I love the 90s Greekelodeon brought together Greek organizations in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity and Boys and Girls Club.

The week began with the Parade of Lights, which is a parade that goes through downtown Chico. Team Are You Afraid of the Dark won with their spooky float covered with zombies, lit up letters and a haunted house.

The blood drive on Monday and Tuesday was a huge success. Alpha Gamma Delta had more than 80 people donate their blood and other chapters were not too far behind.

Greek Week Tug-of-War

The Woodstock’s fundraiser raised even more money for the Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity. Banners of each team were on display in the restaurant and Sigma Kappa, Alpha Sigma Phi, Sigma Pi and Upsilon Kappa Delta took first place for their intricate Are You Afraid of the Dark poster.

Greeks got a break from the competition by coming together to watch Night At the Roxbury on Wednesday and sharing a good laugh.

It was back to competition the next few days with slime time live, Greek Olympics and dodgeball. Team Rugrats took home first place for dodgeball since their teams accumulated the most points overall.

Greekolodeon ended with the talent show on Sunday, which gave each chapter an opportunity to showcase their talents and funny nature. Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Alpha and Lambda Theta Nu won the overall talent awards. Team Are You Afraid of the Dark cheered in victory as the announcers deemed them the winners of the entire Greek week.

4-Greeks would like to congratulate all of the Greeks for their hard work especially with the Habitat for Humanity builds, Boys and Girls Club clean ups and dedicating their entire week to raise money for these two local philanthropies.

Greek Week Shirts by 4-Greeks!

This year, the theme is “I Love the 90s: Greekolodeon” and all the sororities and fraternities are divided into teams named after old nickelodeon shows, like “Rugrats” and “Rocket Power.” While they’re all competing against each other to raise money for Habitat for Humanity and Boys and Girls Club, the focus for this year’s Greek Week is unity. It can be difficult to achieve at times, but from October 7th to the 15th, all of the members of the Greek system will be working together and sporting their matching Greek Week shirts while they do it.
The entire week is going to be filled with fun activities, charity events, and friendly competition. There will be a kick-off party at 33 Steaks and Booze on Friday, October 7th, the Habitat for Humanity build the following day, a movie night, Boys and Girls Club Clean-up on the 13th, and Greek Olympics the next day on Shasta and Lassen lawns. There’s even going to be a talent show, and who wouldn’t want to see a bunch of sorority girls in Rugrats diapers?
So when you see a mob of Greeks donating blood in the BMU on October 10th, eating pizza for the Woodstock’s fundraiser the next night, or partaking in Slime Time Live on the 13th, jump right in and participate. Help the Greek system represent Chico State well, and show our community that we care.

The theme for the dance was “The Game of Life” as in the board game, that most of us played while having no idea how hard it was to actually is pay off the college loans that you got on life cards. The costumes where great and Alpha Sigma Phi could not help but to sing a few songs while preparing to go to the social, but the men where surprised when Alpha Delta Pi ladies had numerous songs of their own that they sung. Soon afterwards both groups were on the way to the venue Arabian Nights, who were happy to host the social and provide an awesome D.J. with a dance floor.

A few hours later the dance floor was empty and everyone was burnt out from a night of good old fashioned dancing fun, Alpha Sigma Phi had such a great time that they already gearing up for next years Diamond days philanthropic events and looking forward to the friendly competition.

The second game of the afternoon was between Sigma Nu and Kappa Sigma. Sigma Nu came out swinging from the get go and won the game easily by a score of 18-3 over Kappa Sigma. Game 3 featured Pi Kappa Alpha and Phi Delta Theta. This was a back and forth game, the teams exchanged the lead throughout the game. A late surge by Phi Delta Theta came up just short and with runners in scoring position and two outs. The game ended on a ground ball to shortstop and Pike pulled out the victory, 11-10.

Theta Chi was able to keep their momentum going from their basketball championship win on Wednesday, and was able to come away with the a close 9-8 win over Sigma Chi.

The well-know Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, held its annual Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) this year at the Fraternity’s birthplace at Miami University in Oxford Ohio. Phi Delta Theta consists of around 230,000 members with Chapters in the United States and Canada. ELI is a program put on by the fraternity in which two or more Brothers are nominated to represent their Chapters in a leadership based conference.ELI began on July 30th and ended Tuesday morning, August 2nd. convention were; Ritual, Recruitment, and Risk Management with guest speakers: Jon McBride (NASA Astronaut), Will Keim, Josh Orendi, Erle Morring, and Thomas “Sparky” Reardon. Small Chapter meetings were scattered through the event and members of Phi Delta Theta were able to practice ritual with Brothers from various Chapters in the United States and Canada. Alex Burns, Oregon Alpha, stated “I gained newfound respect and reverence for our founding principles and can say that I am now certain that Phi Delta Theta will be a part of my life until the day I die, both through my actions and through the support my hundreds of thousands of brothers show me.”. He went on to explain, ” I have never been so proud to call myself a member of Phi Delta Theta.” In between Chapter meetings, seminars, and lectures, Phi Delta Theta Brothers were able to tour the General Head Quarters of the Fraternity, compete in Phi Athletics such as wallyball, 3 v. 3 basketball, soccer, a three point shoot-out, and rock climbing, introduce themselves to other Brothers at Phi Cafe, and run in the Iron Phi Landmark 5K.

Brothers Anticipating a Leadership Forum

Nick Morgan of the New York KappaChapter of Phi Delta Theta recalled meeting new Brothers: “It’s a strange feeling. Here’s a person who you have never met and yet you feel like you’ve known each other since grade school. There is an emotional connection that cannot be explained because we have pledged ourselves to the same principles.”. The conference became a pathway for Brothers to resolve issues in their Chapters and participants walked away with more than just new perspectives. Brothers left Miami University with a deeper understanding of Greek life.

On May 6th the Alpha Phi Chapter in San Luis Obispo held their Red Dress Gala. This is their fourth year hosting this event in San Luis Obispo. This year the members of Alpha Phi were able to reach their goal of $20,000 dollars and over the past three years they have recorded $60,000 towards the Alpha Phi Foundation. The Alpha Phi Foundation was first established in 1956 to help found research for cardiac care.

dancing, dinner, silent and live auctions, and guest speakers. Other Greek Chapters were helping the ladies reach their goal as well. Fraternities like Delta Sigma Phi, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon put themselves up for auction as moving help. Alpha Gamma Rho also auctioned off a pool and barbecue party.

Gunnar Sandberg

It was a great day to be involved in Greek athletics this past Friday. The afternoon featured two semi-final games, a home run derby, and the championship game. The home run derby competition was in honor of Gunnar Sandberg, whose inspirational comeback after being struck in the head by a baseball about a year ago, has impacted many students at Chico State. Next spring, the first annual Gunnar Sandberg award will be given out this event to an inspirational Chico State student.

teams for next semesters I Love The 90’s theme. The event, which will take place in early October, will be benefiting The Boys & Girls Club as well as Habitat for Humanity. They will also be re-introducing the traditional Parade of Lights, where each Greek team builds a float to be driven through downtown during Greek Week.

Semi-Final #1: Alpha Sigma Phi vs. Theta Chi

In week one of the season, Theta Chi had easily defeated Alpha Sig by a score of 10-0. However, in that game Alpha Sig was missing a couple key players and was ready for a rematch this time around. Jumping out to an early lead, Alpha Sig was able to prevent Theta Chi from coming back due in part from stellar defense which robbed Theta Chi of hits. Theta Chi made some nice defensive plays of their own, but just couldn’t get their offense going. Alpha Sig won the game by a score of 5-2.

Sigma Nu vs. Pike

Semi-Final #2: Pi Kappa Alpha vs. Sigma Nu

The second semi-final match up turned out to be a more lopsided game. Sigma Nu was able to hang with Pike early on in the game. A combination of errors of defense and good hitting by Pike, was the difference as Sigma Nu was defeated 12-2.

Home Run Derby

Two representatives were selected by each fraternity to participate in a three round home run derby. Each hitter was allotted five outs, and tried to hit as many softballs as possible over a line of cones that spanned across the outfield. Home runs did not carry over from round to round. The final round ended up being a very close slugfest as Garrett from Kappa Sigma was able to beat out Aaron from Sigma Nu by a single home run to win the event.

This also was a rematch from the regular season.  Pike had previously defeated Alpha Sig easily 13-3. Both sides were energized, and wanted more than just making it to the final game. Alpha Sig was looking to bring home their third intramural championship in their first year, while Pike was hoping to win their first ever championship. In the very first inning Pike was able to score multiple runs due in part to well placed hits and mistakes by Alpha Sig. Pike’s pitcher tossed a great game, as Alpha Sig struggled to get hits. After a very quick game, Pike came out victorious by a score of 5-1. Congratulations to Pike for finishing off the year undefeated and for winning their first intramural championship!

Larry Bassow reiterated that, “The future’s bright”, for fraternity athletics, as three out of the five championships were won by Alpha Sig and Pike who are still new additions to campus. It was just announced that this year’s winner of the Greek Cup, which goes to the top point getter overall based on sportsmanship, individual game results, final standings, and championships is Theta Chi.

There was seemingly no better location for Pi Kappa Alpha Fireman’s Ball than the “Biggest Little City in the World.” Reno’s lights and casino atmosphere was a fresh vibe for the Pike’s and their dates.

Getting out of Chico gave the formal a different feel than any other social or date dance the Lambda Psi chapter had been a part of previously in the semester.

Casino, which is also connected to Circus Circus and the Eldorado. Check in began at 3:00pm on Saturday, May 7th. As the men began to filter in throughout the day, the excitement of the night’s events was evident in everyone’s electrified attitudes. At 7:00pm dinner was served. A chicken pesto dish with potatoes and vegetables was a great entrée, especially served prior to a slice of cheesecake.

While everyone was seated in the Silver Baron Ballroom the former president and founder of Pike in Chico, Nic Alonzo, gave a speech. It was highlighted by the accomplishments of the chapter under his reign, and at the end he passed it off to the president elect, Trevor Payne. Trevor expressed his excitement of his upcoming presidency and appreciation for Nic and the rest of the Pikes for their support. An award ceremony followed the speeches, and brothers were recognized for their involvement in the fraternity as well as some funny awards such as “Worst Composite Picture.”

sorority candidate that exemplifies Pike’s ideal woman. This year Nicola Lore from Alpha Delta Pi and Alyssa Seidman from Alpha Phi were the two running for dream girl. Nicola ended up winning in an extremely close race to become the new Dream Girl. Both girls were congratulated for being awesome and the fraternity loves their support.

After the brothers enjoyed this portion of the night, the tables were moved, and the dancing commenced. The brothers of age were able to gamble after the dance, and most of the Pike’s enjoyed exploring Reno to the fullest extent. The 2011 Spring Reno formal was a success for Pike, and the night held some of the best memories for the chapter’s history thus far.

Alpha Sigma Phi held their first Black & White formal this past weekend at Studio One Ballroom in downtown Chico. The Alpha Sig’s were fortunate enough to use this nice brand new venue that is located on Wall Street.

The chocolate fountain was a big hit, as it always is, and everyone who attended had a great time dancing on the hardwood floor. Alpha Sig was very pleased with how their first formal turned out, and everyone can’t wait to do it again next year!

Snacks and a bar kept everyone fed and hydrated for the evening, and the sister of Alpha Gamma Delta and their dates couldn’t have looked more incredible! Thanks to all the hard work and planning that went into the event!

On Friday, May 6th, the men of Phi Delta Theta held their annual White Carnation formal. This year the venue was at Arabian Nights in downtown Chico. The doors opened at 9:30 and flooded with Fraternity members and their dates. This was the first formal that the newest pledge class “S.A.B.A.K.T.E.S.” had ever

experienced as fully initiated members. The dance continued past 11 o’clock until everyone had dispersed from the venue. It was a great way to close the semester at Chico State, but now Phi Delta Theta and all of Greek life is ready to buckle down for dead week and end the year on a good note.

the night away. Max Gellar of Phi Delta Theta photographed the couples as they entered the event. It was like prom all over again, only better.

Alpha Delta Pi had an amazing night snacking on the hors d’oeuvres that were set up in the banquet room and taking pictures out on the balcony. After a long night of dancing in heels, the ladies went back home on the trolleys and chanted and sang the entire ride back.

The S.A.B.A.K.T.E.S. class of Phi Delta Theta

Phi Delta Theta – California Xi, welcomed their newest pledge class “S.A.B.A.K.T.E.S.” as brothers on Saturday, April 30th 2011. The class went through a ten week initiation process including fundraising, a rape prevention philanthropy, Gentlemen’s dinner and creating their step and shield. Twelve members filled the S.A.B.A.K.T.E.S. class: Ben Dieterle, Kyle Dailey, Juan Villalobos, Gabe Adley, Matt Lighthouse, Evan Smith, Keaton Bass, Brandon Palmer, Ken Carter, Milton Grant, Mitch Eggers, and Dillon Campos. Gabe Adley described the process as follows: “Pledging Phi Delta Theta has demonstrated the true reason and potential the greek community can convey to the individual, the campus and the community.”. We are proud to call these newly initiated members brothers.
