This past Monday, November 7th 2011, was one of the most important days of the school year here at Chico State. It was a day where students came together from all different organizations, fraternities, and sororities to help get donations for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Monday was the infamous Up ‘Til Dawn.  The theme was “Game On!” so students showed up not only in letters and Chico State attire, but football jerseys too. Frisbees, pizza, drinks, cinnamon bread, shirts, and so much more were given out to students who participated. The shirts were inspirational and made it clear what...

It’s that time of year again. The time when can you spot lit-up floats, donate to blood drives, get involved in community clean-ups, and are absolutely inundated with all those Greek letters. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Greek Week! This year, the theme is “I Love the 90s: Greekolodeon” and all the sororities and fraternities are divided into teams named after old nickelodeon shows, like “Rugrats” and “Rocket Power.”

Larry Bassow Fundraiser Chico State

The Greek Community at Chico State has made tremendous progress in the past five years, and much of that growth and development has been due to the constant hard work of Greek Life Advisor Larry Bassow. As an alumni of a Greek chapter at Chico, Larry has devoted his time and energy into truly helping students learn and take advantage of all that Greek Life has to offer them. That is why when Larry was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer this year, the entire Greek Community rallied to help him in any way they could.

Larry Bassow's Up Til Dawn Tattoo

Chico State has been the top school as far as fundraising goes for Up ‘Til Dawn.  While students and advisor Larry Bassow are still awaiting the results from last year, they have already began planning for next years Up ‘Til Dawn, which will occur on November 7, 2011.  Over 10 years, Chico State has raised over $1,180, 000.00. This past weekend Gamma Phi Beta had their 2011 retreat at South Lake Tahoe. The girls enjoyed a beautiful drive with a little rain toward the last few miles. Once the girls arrived at the hotel, they immediately starting bonding. They sat at tables and ate candy while writing little notes to each other. As the night went on, the Gamma Phi’s learned more and more about each other. The evening started out with

March 31st marked the 11th annual celebration of Cesar Chavez Day. This day is to commemorate the birth of Cesar Chavez, who fought for under-represented workers in California, and to utilize time for service in the community. In Chico, it is a tradition for students to drink heavily on this day. However, Greeks decided they would pay their respects to Cesar Chavez by volunteering their time and involving themselves with Cats in the Community. Cats in the Community is an event where students and Greeks volunteer their time to help pick up trash. There were clean-up crews that helped in...

Sigma Kappa - University of Tennessee: Knoxville - Future House

4 Greeks welcomes Sigma Kappa UTK to our website! They ordered tanks from us not too long ago, but the real story is the house they have in the works. 4,040,000. To the average person this number may seem random but to the ladies of Sigma Kappa at the University of Tennessee this number represents a dream. $4,040,000 is the budgeted cost for their brand new sorority house that is supposed to be completed this summer. In May 2008, The University of Tennessee sororities held a drawing for lots in the brand new Sorority Village. The new Sorority Village will...

All college students at one time will find themselves in the same boat. They are searching for what defines them, which major they should get a degree in, and how to set themselves up for success after graduating. One thing that is commonly overlooked about fraternities is the opportunities that are open to you after you become a member. Much of the focus on fraternity life is negative. This is mostly because when bad things happen they will always take precedence in the media before the philanthropy, community service, and brotherhood aspects of the organization. When joining a fraternity, your...

Finding it hard to remember the Greek Alphabet? This might help.

“For He’s an Alpha Sig!” was heard through the air as a Fraternity, not known to many, soared off of Yolo field victorious. Not only winning the flag football title, but the soccer title as well.   “Who are these guys?” people asked. The answer was Alpha Sigma Phi. Just a year ago, these guys had been finding their own way through life, a ghost in the Greek community. Now, a year strong and they have already showcased their successes and set a high standards. When the red and silver took off as a Greek organization, they knew many obstacles were...

Pi Kappa Alpha is an international fraternity with over 220 chapters. Even though the organization is so prominent among Greeks, little is known about its origin here in Chico, California. Nic Alonzo, the current President of the Lambda Psi chapter at Chico State came from the Sacramento chapter in search of something bigger out of his fraternity experience. He began the process of expanding to Chico in November of 2008. After many phone and face-to-face interviews with directors of expansion, the time came where the Pike headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee sent its recruitment team to Chico. Dustin Joost and Patrick...

It’s that time of year again for Up ’til Dawn and time for Greeks to give their support. Up ’til Dawn is a strictly university run program that raises money for Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a hospital that works with children who have been stricken with cancer at no cost to the patient’s families. The cost for this is enormous so with the help of programs like Up ’til Dawn students get a chance to give back to such a bold effort. Chico held its annual event on November 8th, 2010 in Acker Gym with vast support from the...

As a part of Greek Week, Chico State’s very own Gamma Phi Beta invited speaker Becky Bell to campus to speak to Greeks and athletes alike.  Becky Bell is the Associate Athletic Director at the University of Arizona and an integral part in the “Step Up! Make a Difference!” Presentation made across college campuses.  She spoke about being a leader, taking care of others, and helping others.  She spoke about not caring what other people think of you and do what you think is the right thing.  This presentation comes at a prime time for Greeks, in the middle of...
