Greek Week Chico State

Greek Week has finally come to an end. I love the 90s Greekelodeon brought together Greek organizations in order to raise money for Habitat for Humanity and Boys and Girls Club. The week began with the Parade of Lights, which is a parade that goes through downtown Chico. Team Are You Afraid of the Dark won with their spooky float covered with zombies, lit up letters and a haunted house. The blood drive on Monday and Tuesday was a huge success. Alpha Gamma Delta had more than 80 people donate their blood and other chapters were not too far behind.

It was a very windy Friday afternoon this past week as the opening round of the fraternity softball playoffs kicked off. It was a great day for softball regardless of the weather, as three of the four games were decided by one run. The first game was between Sigma Pi and Alpha Sigma Phi. Sigma Pi jumped out early and led practically the entire game, but a late rally with the bases loaded by Alpha Sig won them the game in the final inning by a score of 10-8. The second game of the afternoon was between Sigma Nu and...

Pike-Softball Champs

It was a great day to be involved in Greek athletics this past Friday. The afternoon featured two semi-final games, a home run derby, and the championship game. The home run derby competition was in honor of Gunnar Sandberg, whose inspirational comeback after being struck in the head by a baseball about a year ago, has impacted many students at Chico State. Next spring, the first annual Gunnar Sandberg award will be given out this event to an inspirational Chico State student.

Sigma Nu Parents Weekend Chico State

This past weekend Sigma Nu held its 2nd annual parent’s weekend. The event started off Friday night with a meet and greet for the parents. Beverages and snacks were provided and the parents were pleased to see their sons for the first time in a while. This was a very relaxing time and it allowed all of the parents to meet each other before the next day’s events.

Sigma Chi vs. Theta Chi Basketball 4/6

Week 5 of Fraternity basketball started with Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Nu. When the second half buzzer rang, the game went to PIKE with a 42-29 win over Sigma Nu. Sigma Nu’s shooting game was no match for PIKE’s heavy defense.

The Bridesmaids from Alpha Gamma Delta Chico State

Bridesmaids, groomsmen, wedding vows, blackjack, music, and dancing are just a few things that were at the Arroyo Room on April 1st. However, Friday night’s double Vegas wedding themed social was far from your average wedding. On Friday night Alpha Gamma Delta, Sigma Nu, and Phi Delta Theta all got together for the most epic wedding Chico has ever seen. Costumes for this social included showgirls, magicians, high rollers, chippendale dancers, and many others. To start off the night there was a mock wedding.  Sigma Nu and Phi Delta Theta both had a best man and Alpha Gamma Delta had...

Chico State Intermurals 3-30 Phi Kappa Tau vs Pike

This week of fraternity intramural basketball began with a matchup between Sigma Nu and Sigma Chi. Sigma Nu had a great shooting game, and pulled away in the second half getting the win with a score of 32-20. Sigma Chi looks to get back on track hoping for a win against Theta Chi on April 6th. Sigma Nu got their second win, and will face Pi Kappa Alpha on April 6th as well. Then, in a battle of the unbeatens, Kappa Sigma pulled through to defeat Theta Chi. The crowd for this game was loud and the game was definitely...

Sigma Nu Chico State University Cup Champions

When Greek Advisor Larry Bassow took the podium last month the room went silent. Everyone was waiting to hear who would be crowned this year’s University Cup winner. When the champion was announced the men wearing black and gold cheered with screams of joy. For the second year in a row

Week two of the fraternity intramural basketball season featured four quality games. In the first game of the night a quick-paced Kappa Sigma team defeated Phi Kappa Tau 51-31, and improved to 2-0 in the early season. Phi Tau drops to 1-1 after last weeks nail-bitter win over the Phi Delt’s. The second game of the night pinned Alpha Sigma Phi, in their first ever intramural basketball game, against the men of Sigma Chi. Sigma Chi’s size and great free-throw shooting proved to be too

Chico State’s fraternities tipped off the first night of basketball on Wednesday, March 2nd. The first fraternity intramural basketball game of the season was between Theta Chi and Pike. The competition of these games is intense as each fraternity hopes to grab bragging rights while on their search of an intramural championship. Theta Chi jumped out to an early lead, showcasing their speed cutting to the basket and getting high percentage shots. The Pikes relied more on their outside shot, and cut the lead to within five at the half. When the Pikes would score, a vuvuzela, commonly heard during the...

With yet another new fraternity on campus, competition was fierce between the ten chapters. Kappa Sigma welcomed 27 new members to their fraternity, the largest amount of all the fraternities on campus. The newest fraternity on campus, Alpha Sigma Phi, added 13 fresh faces. Phi Delta Theta also gained 13 new pledges. Sigma Nu, who also won the University Cup for the second year in a row, added 20 new members to their fraternity. Sigma Chi, back for the first recruitment in a year, gained 18 pledges. Phi Kappa Tau gained 8 new members, Gamma Zeta Alpha welcomed 4, Pi...

Group poses during the fundraiser

Down in Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the ladies of Alpha Phi SLO put together a basketball tournament for their fundraising in which fraternities put together their teams for a day of hoops and competition with a prize of some well deserved bragging rights. The events were held on November 13th on the campus basketball courts. Alpha Phi asked $150 per team and went to local businesses and asked for an additional $75 donation and in return the companies got their names put on their tank-tops. They raised around $2,500 which went to the Alpha Phi Foundation for Cardiac Research....

Alpha Delta Pi Chico State Yarn Maze

One of the final and possibly most challenging events (according to those who participated) that took place during Greek Week was The Amazing Race. The challenge involved running, puzzle pieces, counting, riddles, painting, crab walking, and hula hooping, just to list a few. Each group consisted of four members from each fraternity and sorority from their Greek Week team totaling twelve competitors to a team. Each competitor showed up in their athletic wear ready to race across campus and collect their clues. The clues led to seven obstacles, which were to be completed before receiving the clue (or puzzle piece)...

Chico State - Greek Week 2010 - Talent Show

Dancing and acting and musicians, oh my! Talent was abundant at the final event of 2010 Chico State Greek Week, the Talent Show. Each fraternity/sorority prepared skits, dance routines, and performed with lives instruments demonstrating the amount of diverse talent present in their chapters. Each team battled for the awards of best choreography, most creative, best use of theme, and overall talent. The winners for Best Use of Theme were Phi Delta Theta and Alpha Gamma Delta, both members of the purple team, whose theme was Toy Story. Alpha Gamma Delta utilized Randy Newman’s song “You’ve Got a Friend in...

Greek Week 2010 - Blood Drive - Gamma Phi Beta Giving Blood

The event for Greek week on Monday and Tuesday was the blood drive competition, hosted by BloodSource.  I was skeptical about this event at first because many people have fears of donating, but the turn out was awesome! I was one of the first people in the door, number 19 to be exact, and by the time I left 30 minutes later, they were calling number 108. The blood drive was in the BMU auditorium (as usual) but this year was different. The floor was filled with Greeks wearing their power letters, both as workers for the event and as...
