This past Monday, November 7th 2011, was one of the most important days of the school year here at Chico State. It was a day where students came together from all different organizations, fraternities, and sororities to help get donations for the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Monday was the infamous Up ‘Til Dawn.  The theme was “Game On!” so students showed up not only in letters and Chico State attire, but football jerseys too. Frisbees, pizza, drinks, cinnamon bread, shirts, and so much more were given out to students who participated. The shirts were inspirational and made it clear what...

It’s that time of year again. The time when can you spot lit-up floats, donate to blood drives, get involved in community clean-ups, and are absolutely inundated with all those Greek letters. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Greek Week! This year, the theme is “I Love the 90s: Greekolodeon” and all the sororities and fraternities are divided into teams named after old nickelodeon shows, like “Rugrats” and “Rocket Power.”

Larry Bassow Fundraiser Chico State

The Greek Community at Chico State has made tremendous progress in the past five years, and much of that growth and development has been due to the constant hard work of Greek Life Advisor Larry Bassow. As an alumni of a Greek chapter at Chico, Larry has devoted his time and energy into truly helping students learn and take advantage of all that Greek Life has to offer them. That is why when Larry was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer this year, the entire Greek Community rallied to help him in any way they could.

Gamma Phi Beta - Parent's Weekend

This past weekend was Gamma Phi Beta’s parent’s weekend. On Saturday the girls were able to bring their parents to the Gamma Phi house and show them around. The parents got to see the rooms all decorated and got to look at all the Gamma Phi gear spread around the house. Their was also a sale representative from gammaphibetastore.com so the girls were able to buy shirts, stickers, jewelry, and other Gamma Phi gear.

The active members who initiated the Beta pledge class.

Friday, April 15th marked a new chapter in the lives of the Beta pledge class for Pi Kappa Alpha. The Beta pledge class members are not only new members of Pi Kappa Alpha but are now members of the Greek Life system here at Chico State.

This past week was Gamma Phi Beta’s I-week, and my pledge class’s initiation. We had an extremely busy week, but at the end it was all so much fun and worth everything. On Monday night we all got together to show each other how much we’ve all bonded and how much we love each other. Wednesday we all met up at the Gamma Phi house to present our Bigs with a decorated paddle we had all customized just for them.

On Sunday April 10th, brothers and pledges of Alpha Sigma Phi went over to 3rd & Chestnut and made the ladies of ADPi breakfast at their house. The brothers came over beforehand and cleaned up the house, and brought with them enough orange juice and chocolate chip pancakes to feed a small army. The Alpha Sig’s sang to the ladies as they gathered around the table. It was a very fun and relaxed morning, as both groups shared food and started preparing for next weekend’s “Diamonds are Forever” event. This was the first time these two groups formally had an event together,...

March 31st marked the 11th annual celebration of Cesar Chavez Day. This day is to commemorate the birth of Cesar Chavez, who fought for under-represented workers in California, and to utilize time for service in the community. In Chico, it is a tradition for students to drink heavily on this day. However, Greeks decided they would pay their respects to Cesar Chavez by volunteering their time and involving themselves with Cats in the Community. Cats in the Community is an event where students and Greeks volunteer their time to help pick up trash. There were clean-up crews that helped in...

Social media provides a ton of information about Greek Life.   You Tube especially has an endless number of both informative and purely entertaining videos about sororities and fraternities.  One such video called Top Reasons To Join a So-RAWR-ity is a parody about sororities, which was created based on information found on totalfratmove.com.  This video is hilarious, but obviously discusses many stereotypes.  Each point deserves a response: 1. You will face a lot of tough decisions when you first go off to college, these include where to live, when to have class, and what to eat, this is most people’s first...

Finding it hard to remember the Greek Alphabet? This might help.

Alpha Phi - DC

On Friday March 4, 2011 Alpha Phi held a date dance with the theme “AΦDC”. The women took their dates to Beach Hut Deli where they rocked out all night long, dancing to classical rock tunes. The shirts were designed and printed through 4-Greeks with “AΦDC” on the front and the popular ACDC lyrics, “You shook me all night long” on the back. We wanted to make the shirts as similar to ACDC as possible so we incorporated a watermark on the front of the shirts to symbolize one of their albums. The guitar printed on the shirt is very...
